REGIONAL PRODUCTION UNDERWRITER
Omaha/Lincoln Nebraska

JOB SUMMARY

Write profitable business for the company. Build and maintain strong working relationships with the agency force. Demonstrate strong analytical skills to evaluate new submissions for acceptability within the company underwriting parameters. Visit insured's and potential insured's place of business to better assess acceptability and aid agent in the placing of commercial accounts. Make regular agency calls to assess growth and profitability of agents in their territory. Prospect and appoint new agents in the territory. Assist agents in answering questions and answering requests. Promote good image for company and provide good service. Delegate work to support staff. Submit weekly call reports, itinerary, and expense reports in a timely manner. Work hard to attain positive results (premium growth and acceptable loss ratios) through sound risk selection, developing strong relationships with agency personnel and providing a quality product combined with excellent service. Provide training to new and existing employees as requested. Must reside in Omaha or Lincoln, Nebraska.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Aggressively pursue profitable new business opportunities through review of applications, MVR's, experience mods, loss experience, loss control reports and product brochures for risk acceptability. May consult management, other underwriters, internet and Best Guide. review applications, endorsement requests and renewals for limits and coverages requested.
  2. Ask good questions when agent inquires if risk is acceptable. Select critical information needed. Review daily claims sheets. Work with marketing to monitor production and loss ratios for each agency.
  3. Pricing or Risk/Negotiate. Insure risk is properly classed. Appropriate use of IRPM's, experience rating and judgment rates when necessary. Place risk in the proper program. Review renewals. Work with agents and CRS's to obtain a saleable program for the agent/insured while avoiding adverse selection against United Fire Group.
  4. Work closely with the primary underwriter with common agency assignment who will assume underwriting responsibilities of new accounts once they are issued and completed by the Production Underwriter.
  5. Travel regularly in assigned territory and make agency calls. Visit current and prospective insured's. Work with Loss Control and Marketing to sell complex accounts.
  6. Marketing/Territory Prospecting. Regular visits made to agencies and insured's. Aid agents in placing new accounts. Quote additional coverages. Agent reviews. Certify policies. Recommend coverages, rate changes and provide feedback to management on what is happening in the marketplace, agencies and competition. Prospect territory looking for new agency appointments.
  7. Must have valid drivers license, must meet company driving standards and be able to drive for extended periods of time as required to meet job responsibilities.
  8. Regular attendance.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Strong communication skills, both oral and written to answer questions and inquiries with agents. Must maintain satisfactory working relationships with agency force to write profitable business for the Company. Promote professional image and provide quality service. Must possess strong analytical skills, mathematical skills, and ability to deal with people in a tactful and diplomatic manner. Requires work outside of the office a minimum of two weeks each year visiting with customers.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Four-year college degree preferred. Must have or be working toward your AU (Associate in Underwriting) designation.Four to five years of commercial underwriting experience required.
